Happy September! Thanks so much to everyone for coming out to Open House last night...every child was represented! We have a great class with wonderful parents! We had a busy and fun week in first grade.
We continued our reading unit on Poetry. The kids are starting to know the four elements of poetry and identify them. In Writer's Workshop this week we focused on getting a writing piece started. We sketched, talked to a friend, and wrote about things we've done. We are getting to be better writers every day. In science we wrapped up our unit on Earth's Features and started one on Earth's Resources. We had some fun experiments with soil absorption and weathering. I hope you hear all about them.
Here are some updates and reminders:
*Be sure to check the Handbook for dress code and hair cuts. This year we have to write a note to parents the first time and then send them to the office the next time.
*Please return the orange behavior system acknowledgement form.
*Let Mrs. Hernandez know if you can help with Hispanic Heritage Day from 10-1 on Wednesday, Sept. 29th. Her email is miriela.hernandez@nck12.com
*You will find a Scholastic Book Order in your child's Friday Folder today. There are a lot of great books at a very low price. This is a fun way to get your child excited about reading. We will use all the bonus points we earn to order more David Shannon books for our classroom library! If you order, please place the order form and a check made out to "Scholastic" in an envelope marked with your child's name and Scholastic. These are due by Wednesday.
*Make sure you check out our fun pictures. There are so many you'll have to click on "Older Posts" to see them all.
Our very first Star Student of the year will be London Starks!
The secret word is "happy." (Be sure to write it next to Monday's date in the agenda!)
Have a wonderful long weekend!
Dawn Newland
