Dear Parents,
What didn't we do in first grade this week? On Tuesday we went to St. Petersburg Little Theatre to see an amazing story teller. In art class the children have been working on projects that go along with the African Folktale, "The Turtle's Shell". You should see these next week. I hope you heard all about the characters the storyteller created! It was truly a unique experience. Our spelling bee girls, Sydnie and London did a great job and spelled a lot of hard words. We are all so proud of the hard work and dedication. Breana was an alternate, but she prepared and worked hard too! Today we hosted Grandparent's Day. It was so much fun seeing the children sit down at their desks with their grandparents to give cards and read books. Each family in our class has a loving heritage!
***Don't forget to log all of your February Reading Minutes and turn in your log on Tuesday. If we have more minutes than Mrs. Fleming's class we'll have a breakfast reward the first Monday of March.
***We are in need of donations to our First Grade Store!!!
Our Star Student will be Jasmine!
Our secret word is "lima bean".
Have a wonderful weekend!

Newsletter - February 16, 2011
Dear Parents,
We've had a short, but full week here in first grade. We learned about the wise man and the foolish man in Bible. We know that we need to build our lives on the Rock - Jesus. Then when storms come in our lives, we will be able to stand. We continued our science unit on plants and watched our bean plants grow about six inches over the weekend. All they needed was a little sunshine! In math we've been focusing on reading and making different types of graphs.
Here are a few updates and reminders:
*No school Friday or Monday for students.
*Tuesday is our field trip to the Little Theatre to see "Turtle's Shell". Send or buy a regular lunch. Dress your student in a RED uniform shirt please.
*Wednesday London and Sydnie will represent our class at the Spelling Bee! I am one of the proctors being sent from our school so Mrs. Greenleaf will be with the rest of the class.
*Note the change of date for the last day of the quarter. It is March 4th insead of the 11th. We will have a half day on March 4th...not the 11th.
*Grandparents Day is Thursday, February 24th. Your child's grandparent should have recieved an invitation in the mail. If they haven't, please let me know so we can get one to them. Please let me know on Tuesday how many grandparents will be staying for lunch so we can have an accurate count. (The secret word this week is "grandparents".) It will be a great day!
*I would love, love, love to have some parents to sit at my table at the Bobby Bowden event next Friday the 25th. Think of your poor teacher sitting at that big table all by herself:). I would love the chance to share a meal with you and get to know your family a little better while we show support for our school. Know that there is no pressure to give beyond coming that night. We just want to show a strong support of our school! Let me know if you can come!
Our Star Student is Kiersten
Our Secret word is hidden in the words above:)
Have a wonderful long weekend!

February 11, 2011 - Newsletter
Dear Parents,
I hope you enjoyed this chilly winter week. We had a great time here in first grade. Every week I can see the class look more like "almost second graders". Thanks for doing so great with the new reading homework! The month of January Mrs. Fleming's class won the competition for most reading minutes turned in. They had about 6,000 and we had about 4,000. We are going to try to win this month. Remind your children that his/her extra reading at home could help us win. We will have big breakfast the first Friday in March to celebrate if we are successful!
Here are some things we did this week:
Reading-We continued our unit called "Keep Trying" by reading another Frog and Toad story called "The Garden." We applied reading strategies like summarizing, making connections, and drawing conclusions. We have also been reading lots of AR books in class and I can see levels going up. This class loves to read!!!
Writing - We learned about using four different kinds of leads (beginning sentences) for our writing: Question, Setting, Weather, and Sound. It is amazing to see first graders learn new concepts like this and immediately apply the skill in their writing. Our High School Buddies also came over on Wednesday to help with some revising and editing of our Valentine stories.
Science- We continued to observe the seeds we planted last Friday. We have lots of sprout action. We read chapters in our science books about the characteristics of plants and what they need to survive.
A Few Updates and Reminders:
*Our Valentine's Party will be at the end of the day on Monday the 14th. Don't for get your Valentines!
*Our field trip to The Little Theatre will be on Tuesday, February 22. We will leave after lunch.
*Grandparent's day will be Thursday, February 24th. We will have a special time in the gym and then grandparents will have the opportunity to stay for lunch!
*Let me know if you'd like to sit at my table for the Bobby Bowden event on Friday the 25th!
Our Star Student will be Trevor.
Our secret word is "Love".
