Newsletter for February 4, 2011

Dear Parents,

What a memorable week in first grade. I've seen a lot of former students this week, all the way up to 11th grade and they still remeber who they were for the First Grade Famous American Wax Museum. The kids were excited all week to share information they've learned about the person they researched. The wax museum was incredible. The costumes were almost as adorable as your sweet children frozen in time as wax figures. The kids are so proud of themselves and so is their teacher. A great day in first grade!

Our first grade store was super today. Many of the students could already count their own money to make purchaces. Thanks to everyone who sent in items to sell!

We actually did cover other material this week:

Reading-We continued our unit called "Keep Trying." We read a story about Frog and Toad trying to fly a kite. Our focus was on cause and effect relationships. We also learned that we should keep trying even when others discourage us.

Writing-In writing this week we wrote stories about the people we love. We learned how to begin our stories with a "Question Lead". These are precious.

Math-We contined to practice counting money with lots of new centers and computer games. Every child is improving. Keep practicing at home too. We also learned more about bar graphs and adding 3 numbers together.

Bible-This week we learned about what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. We have to be a follower and a student. We learned about the first 12 disciples and sang a song to help us remember their names.

Science-We planted seeds in cups and started our observation journals.

A few updates and reminders:

*Remember to send a water bottle with your child everyday. We get really thirsty and it takes away from learning when we have to go to the water fountain a lot.

*Please send in your $5.00 for our Feb. 22nd field trip to The Little Theatre if you haven't yet.

*Scholastic book orders are due by Thursday.

*I don't know if you've heard about the Bobby Bowden event on February 25th at Raymond James Stadium yet, but I'd like to invite you to join me if you can! My hope is to have a table for our class with at least eight parents. A single ticket is worth $100. However, if I turn in my eight names together, we will recieve a 10% discount. If you'd like to come, let me know by February 11th so we can get a good table near the front! Check out the Northside website for more information.

*There is new Thursday night homework in the Friday Folder. The first one is not due until next Friday.

The Star Student will be Emily!

The secret word is quarter.

Have a Wonderful Weekend!

Dawn Newland
