October 15, 2010 - Newsletter

Dear Parents,
We had a fantastic start to the second quarter! I truly can't believe time is going by sooo fast. We continued our reading unit on "Things that Go" focusing on the reading strategy "comparing and contrasting". We also learned about plural nouns and pronouns in Language Arts. In Science Lab this week the children did some fun experiments with ramps and cars, racing to see which car was the fastest and why. Mr. Fleming also showed them how to defy gravity with a bunch of cups of water that he swung over his head. We learned about forces like push, pull, friction and gravity.
We also had another big week in Writing! We finished up Unit 2 by choosing a story from our Author's Notebooks to publish. We buddy edited with a friend then I (the final editor) made corrections. This time we made books and illustrated them. They turned out great. Make sure you have your child read it to you and whoever else will listen this weekend!

Here are some upcoming dates and reminders:
10/29 - First Grade Fall Fun Day! This great day is coming together because of all of you. Thanks to everyone who has volunteered to run a station and to send things in. If you are able to come, we still have plenty of jobs:). Let me know in your child's agenda. We could still use some non chocolate candy for the Hay Hunt and some small water bottles in a cooler of ice. Remember your child can dress like a farmer or a scarecrow that day!

11/11-Great Explorations Field Trip. We will leave the school around 10:30 and return around 2:00. Our class will wear red shirts again. We will eat a very early lunch (brunch) at 10:00 and then have a big snack when we get back to school.

10/18-10/22 - Homecoming Week! The dress up days are:
Mon.-Sports Day
Tues.-Crazy Hat Day
Wed.-Cowboy Day
Thurs.-Tacky/Clash Day
Friday - Spirit Day (Red, White, and Blue)
Also this week we will be collecting for a food drive. You can find the items listed on the Northside website. This will be a fun week ending with an all school Pep Rally next Friday!

Our Star Student will be Kiersten!

Our secret word is "Homecoming"!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Newsletter for October 8, 2010

Dear Parents,
We had a busy and fun week in first grade! We started our new reading unit on "Things that Go" and our science unit on Motion and Energy. We kicked it off with a great trip to the science center where we learned all about motion and how it's effected by different forces. We also closed out our Animal unit by seeing and touching a lot of cool animals - including a hairless guinea pig. I still can't stop thinking about that little guy. We are wrapping up our Unit Two in writing. We've been focusing on writing "Oreo" paragraphs with a beginning, three middles and an ending. We've also been talking about using five senses words to describe. We are working to stay focused on one small moment in time and writing the "outside" and "inside" story (tell how you feel about what happens in your story). I am thrilled with the progress all of the students are making. They each get a little better each day. Next week we will have our next Publishing Party. I will ask a few of you to send in some fun treats for that day!

Updates and reminders:

*First Grade Fall Fun Day is scheduled for Friday, October 29th from 9:15-10:30. At our meeting Thursday afternoon we did some planning. We need lots of volunteers on that day to make it a success. Let me know if you can come in your child's agenda! Students and moms and dads can dress like a farmer or a scarecrow that day!
*MATH MAGICIAN-Math Magician is meant to be a "fun" way for your child to practice and master basic addition and subtraction facts. If it is in any way stressful to your child, here are some other ways to reach the same goal. Use flash cards with the same facts. Hold them up and let your child tell you the answer. As long as they can do it quickly (no fingers or toes:), write me a note saying they passed that level and I will give them a sticker. Also, if your child knows the facts on Math Magician and just can't type that fast, type for them. Let them tell you the answer and you type it in. We want this to be fun, so whatever you have to do...do it:).
*Our Auction basket will be the best one. Thanks so much for sending in such great items. I already know a few people with their eye on it.
*October 18-22 is Homecoming Week. We will have dress up days like "sports day, cowboy day, clash day and spirit day". More details will come soon.

Our Star Student will be Trevor.

Our secret word is gravity.

Have a wonderful weekend!
