Newsletter for October 8, 2010

Dear Parents,
We had a busy and fun week in first grade! We started our new reading unit on "Things that Go" and our science unit on Motion and Energy. We kicked it off with a great trip to the science center where we learned all about motion and how it's effected by different forces. We also closed out our Animal unit by seeing and touching a lot of cool animals - including a hairless guinea pig. I still can't stop thinking about that little guy. We are wrapping up our Unit Two in writing. We've been focusing on writing "Oreo" paragraphs with a beginning, three middles and an ending. We've also been talking about using five senses words to describe. We are working to stay focused on one small moment in time and writing the "outside" and "inside" story (tell how you feel about what happens in your story). I am thrilled with the progress all of the students are making. They each get a little better each day. Next week we will have our next Publishing Party. I will ask a few of you to send in some fun treats for that day!

Updates and reminders:

*First Grade Fall Fun Day is scheduled for Friday, October 29th from 9:15-10:30. At our meeting Thursday afternoon we did some planning. We need lots of volunteers on that day to make it a success. Let me know if you can come in your child's agenda! Students and moms and dads can dress like a farmer or a scarecrow that day!
*MATH MAGICIAN-Math Magician is meant to be a "fun" way for your child to practice and master basic addition and subtraction facts. If it is in any way stressful to your child, here are some other ways to reach the same goal. Use flash cards with the same facts. Hold them up and let your child tell you the answer. As long as they can do it quickly (no fingers or toes:), write me a note saying they passed that level and I will give them a sticker. Also, if your child knows the facts on Math Magician and just can't type that fast, type for them. Let them tell you the answer and you type it in. We want this to be fun, so whatever you have to do...do it:).
*Our Auction basket will be the best one. Thanks so much for sending in such great items. I already know a few people with their eye on it.
*October 18-22 is Homecoming Week. We will have dress up days like "sports day, cowboy day, clash day and spirit day". More details will come soon.

Our Star Student will be Trevor.

Our secret word is gravity.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Dawn Newland
